Seven Pillars for Kajiji Health Zone Development

Seven Pillars for Kajiji Health Zone Development

Introductory paragraph coming

Pillar 1: Communication

Our dream for this pillar is to provide Kajiji with reliable means of communication with the outside world. Efforts to have one national cell phone company establish a cell phone tower has not succeeded. In the meantime, we have purchased a small communication system that will be installed in July that will give them access to internet and one telephone line. With assistance from friends working for Qualcomm we are now developing a proposal for possible grant through their foundation Wireless Reach.

Pillar 2: Credit Union

The goal for this pillar is to assist a group of 15 women and 15 young motorcycle transporters within the Kajiji Health Zone acquire entrepreneurial skills before making it possible for them to access microcredit. It is our dream to make sure that funds needed for microcredit to be generated locally. To accomplish this, we have purchased several three and five wheel tricycles that will be made available to the Association of Motorcycle Transporters. Part of the income from the sale of tricycles will be reinvested in the community as capital fund for microcredit.

Pillar 3: Education, Youth, and Leisure

Our dream for this pillar is to work with local leaders at improving the quality of education of the primary and secondary schools located in Kajiji and Kulindji by first developing a learning center with a library, study and reading rooms, computers, and solar and wind powered generator for evening studies or meetings. Second, develop a sport center for promoting youth activities and by making accessible soccer balls, volleyball, basketball, and handball in all the schools of the Health Zone.

Pillar 4: Energy & Water

The main goal of this pillar is to make safe and clean water accessible to the majority of the population of Kajiji Health Zone by drilling water wells for health centers, primary and secondary schools, the hospital and providing electricity for Kajiji and the city of Kulindji. We postponed this aspect of our involvement in Kajiji in order to give priority to transportation issue that seems to be very urgent based on our recent conversation with people in the area.

Pillar 5: Entrepreneurial Development

The main goal of this pillar is to assist 15 women and 15 men from the Kajiji Health Zone region acquire business and entrepreneurial skills needed to develop, manage, and control small rural businesses as well as becoming the founding members of the Kajiji Credit Union. The initial training was conducted in February 2013 to a large group. A follow up for smaller group was conducted in July 2013. Those with promising business plan will have access to the initial funding that will be made available this summer. In 2016 we hope to integrate the training in entrepreneurship in the communication grant as described above.

Pillar 6: Primary Health Care

The main goal of this pillar is to strengthen and sustain the capacity of the Kajiji Health Zones to provide and manage priority primary health care interventions to a population of 119,000 people plus additional patients from Angola (up to 25% of the hospitalized patients during certain seasons). Initially, we have agreed to assist the Kajiji Health Zone with the rehabilitation of five Health Centers. One of the five will require building a new building infrastructure. We are seeking families, medical groups or individuals willing to adopt a health center for $7,500 per year for 3 years.

In terms of our long term involvement, we believe that by assisting the Kajiji Health Zone implement the Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI) and the Integrated Community Case Management (ICCM) we would have made a contribution not only to the health zone but to the local population that is our main concern. See section on Communication for a brief summary.

Pillar 7: Transportation

The main goal of this pillar is to facilitate access higher quality of transportation in the Kajiji Rural Region by introducing heavy duty three and five wheel tricycles cargo from China for moving people and goods between villages, between villages and the large city of Kahemba and neighboring villages and cities in Angola. We have already purchased 12 as a trial. They should be delivered to Matadi on June 5, 2013. This is exciting because it is a project with possible national ramifications.

Furthermore, given that the introduction of these three wheelers can have an impact beyond Kajiji, if this first experience ends being very positive, we dream of developing a shop on the Maluku property outside Kinshasa for assembling these three and five wheel tricycles while adapting them to transport people and goods, into ambulance for clinics and hospitals, and transport of water and fuel.
